Second Midwife Appointment

I had my 2nd midwife appointment today. Sounds weird, right? Almost 26 weeks and only my 2nd one! I didn't have my first until 20 weeks, 3 days and then they didn't want to see me for 5 weeks, which has seemed like forever! I am SO happy I made the switch from my ob to a CNW (certified nurse midwife).

I was supposed to do my Glucose test for Gestational Diabetes today which is what my midwife told me at my last appointment, so I was pretty nervous. I haven't been eating all that great lately (for me anyway) and even though I know there is nothing I can DO or NOT DO to prevent GD, I would still be upset if I end up having it. I don't think I do for any other reason besides I do have PCOS so my insulin levels and other hormone levels are pretty messed up to begin with. I would think it's more common to get GD if you have PCOS, but it's not something I have looked into all that much yet. Anyway, I saw a different midwife today and she said that I would do the test in 3 weeks at my next appointment when I will be 28weeks and 5 days. Apparently it's more accurate around that time, so that works for me. Not to mention I was VERY happy to not have blood drawn today since I am pretty nervous about that since leaving Shiloh, the expert blood taker at my OB's office.

The nurse took my weight (144 lbs according to their scale, 140 according to my scale at home this morning) which was fine, except every time she takes it (this happened last time, too) she doesn't balance it quite right. I'm not one of those woman who cares about my weight gain (as long as it's safe), but at least get it accurately! It was definitely, again, tipped more towards the right...I was looking at it head on of course and she wasn't. She could have EASILY moved it over a couple pounds, but whatever. At least if she is consistent with that awful measuring that it won't look like I've gained more than I actually have. According to my scale at home though and my weight first thing (always most accurate) this morning I am up 15 lbs since pre pregnancy. I'm good with that for almost 26 weeks.

Then we went to our room and she checked my blood pressure. She didn't tell me the number, but said it was good.

Then Emma came in with a medical student who was observing that day. We joked about if she wanted to become an OB or a midwife and Emma said how they try to teach a new generation of OBs to be more like midwives in their philosophies of care. I think that's cool, so I was happy to have her. My midwives are through Vanderbilt, which is of course also a school, so that's why that happens. I don't mind for appointments at all and think it's neat, but I think for my birth I will request no students and no students doing anything to me.

Emma was really nice, so I am really excited I am so happy with now at least two of the midwives in the practice. I did make my next appointment w/ my original, Linda, just b/c I saw her first and like her a lot so I wanted to go back to her if the appointment was available.

Anyway, we talked with Emma about some questions I had (when she'd talk about induction and for what medical reasons, internal exams, fetal monitoring, etc). She was pretty much on the same page as us for everything so that was great.

Then she and the med student checked our Fundal height (this was the first time I've ever been measured) which was right at 26 weeks! I think for 25 weeks and 5 days that is really great! Then they used the Doppler on us and it took just a minute or two to find the heart beat. They picked up a lot of movement, some that I couldn't even feel still (even though I feel like I feel a lot more now) so that was kinda neat. I wonder what the next few weeks will bring if he was moving so much and I still couldn't feel it all? Cool! Heart rate was good, in the 140's.

They were out of books at my first appointment, but I got the official book today. I'm a book whore so any time anyone gives me a book, I'm a happy girl! At first I thought it would just be the same old pregnancy book, but I started reading it on our way home and it's really good!!! So far it talks about things like medical interventions that we're doing on healthy woman, treating pregnancy as a disease to be "treated", etc. It's pretty interesting! I would definitely recommend this book. Here is the Amazon link if you'd like to read more/read reviews.

So, all is well in baby land. :) Go back in 3 weeks and then I'm sure from then on I will have appointments every 2 weeks. It is amazing how fast time is flying!

  1. Oh, let me know how you like that book. I haven't read that one yet!

Hahahaha I love the hat! They are going to be so cute together. Now that I can relax about the booties, I am finishing Doven's hat.

    Yay!
