The Great Pickle Quest

The pickle world is not very friendly to a natural chick.

Yes, you read that right....PICKLES!!! I hadn't even thought of pickles until today, but when I accidentally got a sandwich and soup from Panera in my to go order instead of just my soup I was delighted to find the dill pickle that accompanied the sandwich. I don't think anything has tasted THAT good in weeks. I'm not sure what it is, but I guess there is something to pickles and pregnancy!

So I had to go out again to go visit my horse and I stopped at the grocery store on my way home (Kroger, not Whole Foods where I prefer to shop but is further away/not on the way home) in search of some more pickles. (OK, and I'm not going to lie, I also bought some organic version of Dove bars which are my favorite! Yay for pickles and ice cream!)

I don't buy foods with trans fat or high fructose corn syrup and you would be amazed at how much of that stuff is in conventional foods at the grocery store. I tried to buy bloody mary mix the other day and of course that had all that garbage in it too! Anyway, my pickle choices either had "less than 2% HFCS" or "Yellow 50". What the fuck is yellow 50 and why does it need to be in my pickles? (I also avoid artificial coloring) I called my husband who is still at work, almost in tears from the pickle aisle.

Seriously? Why does this shit need to be in our food? And why can't a pregnant girl get a healthy pickle??? I settled for the HFCS ones and figured it's very little and I'd rinse them off. It still bothers me though, but I HAD to have some pickles and stat! I can't wait to go to Whole Foods and hopefully find some pickles that are simply pickles.

  1. I know what you mean being on the TCM lifestyleis hard as everything in Vons and other stores are bad for you! Whole Foods which I discovered today was awesome...pricey but worth it :)

  2. Yeah, it's amazing once you start actually looking at what's in your food (although I did this long before TCM) I LOOOOOVE Whole Foods! If you try to buy things that are on sale, produce in season, and not a ton of prepared foods, it really isn't that much more expensive we've found. Plus, often times their own brand of products is cheaper than the "name brand" that's full of crap at the regular grocery store.

  3. Have you tried Claussen pickles? They are stored in the refrigerator area (I know at Publix they were by the bacon/sausage stuff - not sure if I ever bought them at Kroger). I'm not sure how much better they are for you, but I think they are much tastier than the stuff in the pickle aisle.

  4. Thanks, Kim - those were actually the ones I ended up getting (w/ HFCS). I agree, they are the best!
