The Cloth Diaper Plan

In my recent burst of energy in combination with knowing I am in my second trimester, knowing we still have a heart beat, and being given my first cloth diapers for my stash I've spent hours deciding on what our plan is and researching the best route to go.

First here are the diaper covers I plan to use for the newborn stage when we are using the fitted diapers (Kissaluvs in size 0).

This is a picture of the cover I was given yesterday (thanks, Corinne!) and it's totally adorable. Yes, a bit girly, but if we have a girl it will be perfect and honestly I will still use it on a boy since I like it either way and I'm pretty sure a newborn won't care whatsoever!

Then, I will need to buy a few more covers for when we use the fitted diapers and have chosen Thirsties Covers since they seem to be really popular and I have read they work really well with the Kissaluv fitted diapers.

Here are what the 3 Kissaluv fitted diapers look like that I was given yesterday. They are so tiny and adorable I can't even stand it!
They also make them in organic cotton and I am trying to decide what I want to buy more of. Everything I've read says that cotton has such a high use of pesticides that I am wondering if it's worth it to spend the extra few dollars per diaper (when really we're only going to need this for the first few weeks or so) or just get some more of the above.
In addition to doing some fitteds with covers for the newborn stage we're also going to get some Bum Genius 2.0's in Xsmall which are All In Ones (so they work just like a disposible basically) for the newborn stage to make things a little easier in the beginning too.
Then once the baby is over 10 lbs or so depending on his/her build we'll switch to our one size bum genius diapers which will last us throughout the rest of the diapering stage. There are 2 ways we can go about this and I've talked to a bunch of people about what is best. Bum Genius does not make an All In One Diaper in one size except for in organic cotton. Again, it's not that I am opposed to that at all, but from the reviews and people I've talked with they say the BG 3.0 Pocket diapers fit better (no leaks) and you can adjust the absorbency which is really nice, especially at night.

So I think the plan is going to be to do a few BG AIO One Size Organic diapers for the pure ease of them for going out and about and such and the majority to the BG 3.0 Pocket Diapers which seem to be the most popular. Really the only difference is you have to stuff them with inserts after you wash them, which to me is not a big deal at all and I like the flexibility of inserts.
And here are the Pocket Ones. There is a price difference of about $7.00 between doing the organic AIO one size the regular pocket one size. When you're needing 20-30 diapers that really adds up and since the majority of people on the Eco Friendly Bump board are happier w/ the Pockets it seems, I think it is OK that they're not organic 100% of the time. It's still 100x better than plastic and toxic gels to me so I feel really great about our choices...and can't wait to start ordering! I plan to get them all from Jillians Drawers most likely, but I put them on our registry and will likely order a few every month from here on out since I'm not sure how many people are going to spend tons of money on cloth diapers for us.

I hope this post helps out any other new mom's thinking about cloth diapering! There are SO many options, but this route seems to be pretty popular in terms of ease and expense in the long run since you don't have to continually buy new sizes.

  1. I used the Kissaluvs and Thirsties wrap with non bleached indian prefolds for my daughter. But I didn't start until she was a little over 2YO. I am pregnant now and plan to CD from the start. It isn't difficult, really fun and does save money. I think I am going to do a mix of diapers this time until I figure out what is best for this baby. The baby's build makes a big difference.

I have that exact Kissaluvs cover, one green and one pink both with the dots.

  2. Thanks for posting! I would like to CD as well and feel pretty overwhelmed at all of the choices (I am just two weeks ahead of you:)).
